Introduction

Welcome to Grade 3/4!

September 2011

We hope everyone had an enjoyable summer!

Expectations:

Students are expected to demonstrate appropriate and respectful behaviour at all times.

Students are expected to be prepared for class.

Indoor shoes are to be worn in the classroom and gym.

Agendas are to be taken home each day and returned with a parent signature.

School absences:

Please call the school @ 905 986-4227 to report an absence.  Messages can be left at any time.

Boomerang Lunches:

At CCPS, our school-wide policy is everything that comes to school in a lunch bag returns home again. Therefore, what is not eaten will return home in the lunch bag (including garbage, compost, etc.)

**Also, please remember to send only *nut-free* products.

Agendas:

Each day, we will take a few minutes to write an agenda note from the board.  The agenda needs to be signed by a parent / guardian each night.  Parents are also encouraged to write the teacher a quick note in the agenda if you have any questions or concerns.  We may also communicate to you through the agenda if needed.  Thank you for your support.

Learning Skills

The learning skills we will be focusing on this year, as outlined by the Ontario Ministry of Education, are: responsibility, organization, independent work, collaboration, initiative and self-regulation.

How to help at home:

Help your child establish good work habits by creating an agenda routine.  For example, when arriving home from school each day, your child’s routine might be unpacking his or her backpack and setting the open agenda on the kitchen table for you to read and sign.

Your child is encouraged to read daily.  Take turns reading, stopping to discuss and checking for understanding a few times.  This is a great opportunity for children to read what they are interested in and, at their level.  (Quality magazines, appropriate Internet sites, the newspaper non-fiction, poetry, short stories, and even picture books for older children are fabulous!)  Make this an enjoyable time together.  Home reading is an opportunity for students to practise the skills they are learning in class.

Curriculum Previews:

On the first Wednesday of each month, a curriculum preview like this one will be sent home, highlighting some of the topics and units we will be studying.  There will also be tips on ways to help your child at home.  Here is a glance at what we will be working on this month:

Language:

-Mini- lessons on making good book choices, thinking and talking about reading, etc.

-Comprehension strategies for improving understanding while reading

-Paragraph writing and recount writing

-Word study (ongoing)

Presentations

We have written reports on animal habitats, and have used technology in the classroom to present those reports as a slideshow.  Here are the presentations.  Your child's presentation will use either their initials or a pseudonym.  The computer organized the order of the presentations - have fun!  Let us know which one is yours!

After you click on the link, click the "Download" button on the top right-hand corner above the gray screen in the white bar to see the presentation, then click "Open" - it may take a few seconds.
